Virgin Media enters new mobile web partnership

Virgin Media has added a new mobile portal to its range of web-based services, it has emerged.
The company, which also provides a wide selection of telecommunications and broadband packages, announced this week it has launched a new offering aimed at providing geographically-based information.
Named RoundU, the system will be available to all mobile internet users in the UK and will utilise a local search service from Mobile Commerce - a group which specialises in location-based platforms.
It is hoped customers will enjoy RoundU's ability to pinpoint their whereabouts, as well as provide data on their surroundings.
Among the information which people can view will be venue details from toptable, Itchy Guides and The Press Association, in addition to a host of other arts and entertainment content.
Business users may also enjoy simple access to Thomson's listings and for the more casual customer, restaurant, cinema and hotel booking facilities may prove more tempting.
Steve Page, chief executive of Mobile Commerce, said: "To be working with such a large and respected high profile company as Virgin Media - with 10 million customers - is something we're relishing."
He added it was expected RoundU would offer more than 11,000 recommended drinking and dining venues, as well as 1.9 million listings for UK businesses.
"I'm proud that this deal is another endorsement of our leadership in mobile content aggregation and location based search," he concluded.
Last week, Virgin Media announced its chief financial officer Jerry Elliott would step down from May 31st.
