WiMax take-up rate lagging

WiMax take-up rate lagging Wireless broadband in the form of WiMax is failing to take off on the level predicted before its launch because consumers are finding it difficult to pinpoint the service's unique selling point, it has been claimed.

According to ZDNet.co.uk, the broadband product is not progressing at the fast rate which was formerly expected, amassing about 270,000 customers worldwide during 2006.

The difficulties experienced by WiMax may have arisen because consumers are finding it hard to see the service's benefits over those offered by 3G or DSL.

However, the website states that the three technologies are quite different and should not be generalised.

WiMax needs to show its capabilities through integrated messaging, voice over internet protocol and no international roaming charges, among other things, the website claims.

Recently, broadcast watchdog Ofcom said that it would consider allowing firm UK Broadband to provide WiMax services in the UK.
