Wireless security "very important"

Wireless security It is vital that users of home wireless internet connections keep their networks secure, according to one expert.

There are several "very easy" measures that web users can implement in order to prevent others from using their connection without permission, a spokesperson for the National Computing Centre (NCC) said.

He explained that an unsecured network can result in others potentially being able to hack into users' systems, view personal data and even look at what surfers are transmitting over the connection.

"Some people do seem to just take the product out of the box, install Wi-Fi and just think about security afterwards, when the reality is that someone can access your data and you are running the same risks you would be if you were accessing the internet over a wired connection," he warned.

The NCC is an organisation of corporate entities that promotes the efficient use of IT to enhance competitiveness.
