More than eight million homes can now access full fibre broadband

More than eight million UK homes now have access to full fibre broadband, the latest edition of Ofcom’s Connected Nations report has revealed. 

Three million additional households were connected up over the course of 2021 and out of these, 750,000 actually purchased a full fibre internet package.

This means that the total number of properties actively using a full fibre broadband connection now stands at 2 million, or a quarter of UK homes.

On the other end of the spectrum, the report shows that 123,000 households (which equates to.4% of the UK) are still unable to achieve a basic broadband speed of 10Mbps.

“Full fibre is helping meet those demands, with millions more benefitting from faster speeds and more reliable connections,” said Lindsay Fussell, network and communications director at Ofcom. 

“But some homes in hard-to-reach areas still struggle to get decent broadband, so there’s more work to do to make sure these communities get the connections they need.”

The regulator’s report also explored the current state of 5G services and found that an estimated half of all UK households now live in an area where at least one provider is offering it.  

5G devices have also seen a significant uptake, going from just 800,000 purchased in 2020 to more than six million in 2021.
