Millions of people experience anxiety because of slow broadband speeds, a report has claimed.

The Fix Britain’s Internet campaign conducted research which found that around 1 in 10 adults experience stress when dealing with unreliable broadband.

The campaign claimed that extreme behaviours such as breaking down in tears and angry outbursts were common when slow broadband meant that everyday tasks were interrupted.

The Fix Britain’s Internet campaign is a group of UK ISPs including Sky, TalkTalk and Vodafone collaborating with the Federation of Communication services to create an open forum for broadband customers to voices their ideas and complaints.

A sample of 2000 adults was taken, with experts claiming that the levels of stressed caused could be detrimental to long-term health.

David Lewis, a neuropsychologist, said that slow broadband was found to cause a number of medical effects.

“The tortoise-like speed of a poor broadband connection doesn’t just a waste our time, it can also be detrimental to our physical and mental health.”

“My own lab’s research has proved that when internet connections slow to a crawl in the middle of completing an online task, we experience significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate, impaired reasoning and decision-making, growing anxiety, intense frustration and even incidents of ‘computer rage’.”

The FBI campaign said that around a quarter of broadband customers were unhappy with their service in some respect, with 56% reporting that simple tasks such as chatting on Skype, shopping online and streaming were made difficult.
