650 extra homes and businesses are set to recieve a superfast connection.
An extra 650 homes and businesses in North Shropshire are set to receive a £1.4 million broadband boost courtesy of local provider Airband.
Taking place just outside the villages of Ellesmere and Oswestry, the project is an extension of the government’s Connecting Shropshire broadband scheme which all of these properties weren’t originally covered by.
The funds were awarded to the Worcester-based provider by Marches and Gloucestershire Viable Clusters Broadband Project which is in turn, being overseen by Herefordshire Council and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Airband will use a hybrid fixed wireless/fibre to the premise solution known as RuralOptic which is capable of delivering speeds of up to 100Mb.
There isn’t a confirmed time frame for the project but it’s estimated it will take around two years.
“Superfast broadband is essential for operating in today’s economy,” said Shropshire Council Cabinet member Nic Lauren.
"It enables a business to connect with their customers, opens up new markets, and creates new jobs for local residents. I’m delighted that this additional investment will bring increased broadband speeds to businesses and local residents in areas that might have missed out otherwise."
