25,000 homes helped by BT Community Scheme

BT has provided 25,000 premises with fibre broadband thanks to its Community Fibre Partnerships project.

BT has provided 25,000 premises with fibre broadband thanks to its Community Fibre Partnerships project.

Openreach has been helping local communities get up and running with fibre connections and has recently hit its 50th community aided.

This deal works by local councils agreeing to fund half the cost of the rollout, with BT covering the rest.

The majority of communities that have benefitted, such as Coleorton in Leicestershire, are ones that are due to not be covered by the government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.

Areas such as this have previously had to experience speeds of just 1-2Mbps, some of the slowest broadband possible.

120 premises in the Coleorton area have benefitted from the scheme. David Baston, a resident of the area, said that the community reached out after waiting a long time for fibre.

“We knew that we might have to wait for some time before receiving fibre broadband and so decided to take matters into our own hands. We approached BT directly and are delighted with the end result. Having access to superfast broadband has opened up many opportunities and we can do so much more online now than before.”

It is thought that local councils have had to contribute between £10,000 and £60,000 in order to bring the project to their area, depending on what challenges a rollout would incur.

BT Openreach has said that it would continue to cover areas that would not benefit from the national rollout.

Kim Mears, Openreach’s MD for Infrastructure Delivery, claimed that the firm was dedicated to its cause.

“We are committed to working with communities like Coleorton to help them achieve their goal of a fast fibre connection. Rural areas often present the most difficult and complex challenges but working together gives us the best chance possible of finding a suitable and affordable way forward.”

“We have a dedicated team focussed on helping people understand what can be achieved in parts of the UK not already covered by existing rollout plans.”
