85% of Scottish homes now have access to fibre broadband, a report has claimed.

Audit Scotland, a public body that tracks services in Scotland, said that this figure could grow up to 95% by next year, provided that BT continues its rollout.

Despite the increase in fibre services in Scotland, the 15% who do not yet have access (mainly those in remote areas) face a struggle getting connected.

The Scottish government has said that it wants everyone in Scotland to have access to fibre by 2020, but auditors have warned that connected rural parts of the country could be “complicated and expensive”.

BT was hired in 2013 to extend Scotland’s fibre network, with £412 million extended to the provider alongside Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

General Auditor for Scotland, Caroline Gardner, said that there was still a lot of work to be done to ensure that Scotland was properly connected.

“Fast, reliable internet access is increasingly essential for everyday life, so it's encouraging to see good progress being made in rolling out fibre broadband.”

"However, there is a lot still to be done by the Scottish government if it is to achieve its vision of a world class digital infrastructure, particularly in improving download speeds in rural areas. It's important that it continues to monitor the cost and progress of broadband roll-out so that these communities aren't excluded.”

2.2 million out of 2.6 million of Scotland’s premises have access to fibre services, which is said to be 1% beyond the original target laid down in 2013.

As well as this, 26 of 32 councils have met requirements for fibre broadband connectivity in the last 3 years.
