Average broadband speeds in the UK dropped during the third quarter of 2014, according to a new report.

Akamai’s latest “State of the Internet” report revealed that average broadband speeds in the UK stood at 10.7Mb in the third quarter of 2014, showing a 3.4% drop.

The study found that 81% of the country can access download speeds of 4Mb or more, with two-thirds of broadband users receiving 10Mb or more.

Despite superfast broadband being rolled out across the country, the number of users who could access 15Mb or more fell from 21% to 20% during the third quarter of last year.

To contradict these findings, the report also stated that broadband speeds in the UK have improved overall year-on-year, with average speeds reaching 17Mb in 2013 increasing by 25%.

Globally, the UK falls behind South Korea (25.3Mb), Hong Kong (16.3Mb), Sweden (14.1Mb) and Switzerland (4.5Mb) in the broadband speed rankings.

In the UK, many homes and businesses can access fibre-optic broadband, with more rural areas expected to receive the digital upgrade than previously thought.

Businesses have also been urged by government to take advantage of the Connection Vouchers scheme, which offers a cash boost to small and medium companies to fund better broadband.

The scheme’s deadline was recently extended to March 2016, to give businesses more time to apply for funding.
