Scientists have tested broadband 50,000 times faster than what is currently available.

Researchers at University College London have discovered a way to send signals through fibre cables that allow for a record breaking 1.125 terabits per second.

This is the fastest broadband speed ever recorded over a single connection, with scientists claiming that an entire series of HD TV could be downloaded in just 1 second.

The tests were part of a study which aims to find ways of improving fibre broadband overall.

Brand new coding techniques were used by researchers in order to compress the amount of data going through cables

Professor Polina Bayvel of UCL claimed that these new speeds could ensure the UK’s digital future.

“This result is a milestone as it shows that terabit per second optical communications systems are possible in the quest to reach ever higher transmission capacities in optical fibres that carry the vast majority of all data generated or received.”

“A high-capacity digital communications infrastructure underpins the internet and is essential to all aspects of the digital economy and everyday lives.”

The next step of the testing will be to see whether these speeds can be replicated over a long distance.

If successful, this type of fibre broadband could potentially start going into production for widespread use.
