Broadband affordability a priority, says MSP

Broadband affordability is important for Scotland, an MSP has claimed.

MSP for Orkney, Liam McArthur spoke out about broadband in Scotland during questions in the Scottish Parliament yesterday.

The Scottish government has previously pledged that 100% of homes in Scotland will have superfast connections by 2021, with Mr McArthur raising concerns about growing costs.

He claimed that the people of smaller towns in Scotland such as Orkney should not have to pay more for broadband services than those in larger cities.

“It is also important that those in more outlying areas are not left paying through the nose for the service they receive. Having good quality, reliable broadband is increasingly essential to being able to access a range of public services as well as the other benefits it brings.”

“Whatever approach the Scottish Government takes to meeting its commitment, addressing the issue of affordability will be key.”

The Scottish Parliament has agreed to consider the issue with the UK Parliament and Ofcom, the consumer watchdog.

The Scottish Government recently published a procurement for its superfast broadband rollout, which revealed that work on the project would soon begin.

The aim for the rollout is to deliver speeds of up to 30Mbps to Scottish homes and businesses, which is 6Mbps faster than the UK government has targeted.

86% of the country already has access to superfast broadband thanks tothe Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project, which equates to around 2.2 million homes.
