A new study has revealed that many broadband customers find the contracts they sign up for confusing and often feel ‘ripped off’.

Edinburgh-based telecoms company Ten Tel conducted research which claimed that plenty of broadband consumers were unsure what they were signing up for.

The provider called for stricter rules when advertising broadband and said that providers needed to be clear on what they were selling.

Ten Tel itself currently offers an “all-in” price with its Advance bundle, which allows customers to see exactly what they are paying before they buy.

Robert McKechnie, Managing Director of Ten Tel, said that broadband customers should fight for a fairer pricing structure.

"(Unclear advertising) can be devastating for those on a tight budget and disproportionately hits groups who need short-term contracts such as students and rental tenants.”

"Consumers deserve better, clearer options and they should be able to trust that their broadband provider is not going to rip them off."

The Advertising Standards Authority are already working on changing the rules when it came to broadband advertising, with providers under pressure to be more clear.

Mr McKechnie added that the firm itself was striving to improve broadband pricing with its own contracts.

“We promise flexible, transparent telecoms options which focus on customers’ needs.”
