Broadband mast plans to go before Swindon planners

Plans for new broadband masts to be built in Swindon are set to go before planners despite being rejected earlier in the year.

The controversial plans were rejected by Swindon Borough Council in February, but interest has grown after both BT and Virgin Media announced that they would be on board to rollout broadband if the masts were built.

Superfast Swindon will this week take the case back to the council in an attempt to make a persuasive business case for the masts.

Superfast Swindon claims that it needs the extra masts in order to fulfil its promise of rolling out broadband to 20,000 homes in the area.

Critics of the plans have claimed that there is no need for extra building as providers are able to lay cables in the standard way.

Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon said that Virgin Media was planning on rolling out broadband without the need for expensive masts.

“The argument of UKBN and Swindon Borough Council is that this is vital to providing residents access to superfast broadband.”

“We know this is absolute nonsense as both BT and Virgin have set out their very clear and rapid roll out timetable for the northern sector without a single penny of taxpayer’s funding as this was a purely commercial decision.”

£1.78 million has been invested in Superfast Swindon so far, with big providers like Virgin Media and BT aiming to complete their own rollouts as well.
