High profile UK business leaders have hit out against current broadband speeds, claiming the ambition is too low.

The Institute of Directors claims that speeds in general should around 1000 times higher than they currently are in order for businesses to be successful.

Currently, the average small business in the UK receives 10Mbps, with business leaders saying that this should be 10Gbps by 2030.

The IoD published a report called Ultrafast Britain, where it claims that the UK is lagging behind a significant number of other European countries when it comes to broadband speeds.

78% of its members said that faster speeds would positively affect the company’s productivity.

Recently, the government imposed a Universal Service Obligation, requiring all broadband to be at least 10Mbps.

However, the IoD has called this a “distraction” and that many users already have much faster speeds at their disposal.

Dan Lewis, senior advisor at the organisation, said that broadband speeds did not match the importance of broadband to businesses in the UK.

“We have the leading internet economy in the G20, and yet download speeds are mediocre and the coverage of fibre optic cable is woeful.”

“But our network is behind the curve. Unfortunately, the government’s current target displays a distinct poverty of ambition.”

The IoD said that it would continue to put pressure on the government in order to raise the USO.
