Broadband the difference for businesses, says MP

Broadband is the difference between businesses staying afloat or going under, an MP has said.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Mark Williams said that broadband quality can make or break a businesses, especially in rural areas.

Speaking in the Westminster Hall, the MP added that broadband access was the “number one request” from small firms in his constituency, and that the area was in the top 10 for lowest broadband speeds.

Despite this, Williams said that he was pleased that the government was recognising the problem surrounding rural broadband, with coverage in Wales rising to 87% overall.

Ed Vaizey, digital minister, responded by claiming that the broadband situation in Wales had drastically improved thanks to the government’s rollout, despite missing the target of 96%.

He added that, in 2011, less than a third of homes in Wales had access to superfast broadband, with 97% now being the target for the end of next year.

Fellow MPs have also commented, saying that the government has “turned a corner” on rural broadband and that the situation was likely to improve further.

The government is continuing its broadband rollout of the UK with the help of providers Openreach and Gigaclear, and aims to bring coverage up to 95%.

Satellite broadband is also being utilised to bring the figure up to a potential 100%, with improved satellite technology able to bring superfast speeds to rural homes and businesses.
