BT achieves fibre-optic broadband target

Broadband provider BT has reached its fibre-optic coverage target, with two-thirds of the country now able to access the new digital technology.

Broadband provider BT has reached its fibre-optic coverage target, with two-thirds of the country now able to access the new digital technology.

Around more than 19 million homes and businesses can now benefit from superfast broadband, delivering better speeds than before.

The target was reached 21 months earlier than originally planned, with the rollout reaching its milestone in March.

Fibre-optic broadband has been delivered under the provider’s own commercial rollout, as well as assisting with the government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.

BT won the bid to lay down the fibre network under 44 contract locations in the UK, with an additional 630,000 rural premises also being approved for a connection upgrade.

It’s also been confirmed that 347,000 new premises subscribed to fibre-optic broadband in the fourth quarter. This means that one customer is purchasing a superfast package every 20 seconds.

Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey said: “The UK now has the widest availability of the top five European economies as well as the highest take-up rate. Commercial operators like BT, with support from Government, are delivering one of the fastest roll outs of fiber [sic] in the world and these figures demonstrate that the Government aim to provide access to superfast speeds to 95% of the UK by 2017 is well on track.”

BT OpenReach’s fibre-optic broadband customer base has now grown to 2.7 million, almost double the number from 12 months ago.
