BT has announced a new service which will crack down on the amount of nuisance calls that customers receive.

Working much like a spam filter for email systems, this new service will divert nuisance calls into a separate voicemail.

Customers will be able to report certain numbers as a problem, which BT will then add to its database.

Users will also be able to start their own blacklist of numbers, meaning they’ll never get calls from numbers they don’t want.

BT estimates that 25 million nuisance calls are made to its customers per week, making the new service vital.

BT has also claimed that it will share information with consumer watchdog Ofcom in order to stop spam calls at the source.

CEO of BT Consumer, John Petter, said that BT was happy to help customers with problem calls.

“Nuisance calls are one of the great annoyances of modern life. Everyone will have received one.”

“We are delighted to have made this major breakthrough. We are giving control of the landline back to our customers and removing a major hassle and grief for millions of customers.”

BT is the newest provider to deal with problem calls, with TalkTalk having implemented a system last year.

Both BT and TalkTalk have signed a Memorandum of Understanding from Ofcom, allowing them to forward information to the watchdog.
