BT took over 70% of the UK’s new broadband customers at the end of 2015, new figures have shown.

The broadband market grew by over 180,000 between October and December 2015, with BT claiming that it was responsible for 130,000 of those customers.

The figures show that 2015 was a good year overall for BT, with the firm seeing its profits rise to £862 million by the end of last year.

Fibre broadband was another area where the provider excelled, with 434,000 new customers signing up to BT Openreach - more than other providers combined.

Chief Executive of BT, Gavin Patterson, said that the provider was ready to take the UK into the future of broadband.

"Fibre is underpinning the growth at Openreach with almost half a million premises taking up the service this quarter via dozens of service providers."

“The UK is poised to take the important journey from superfast to ultrafast broadband and BT is well placed to lead the charge.”

Fibre broadband has taken priority in BT, Mr Patterson added, with BT being in charge of the majority of the government’s broadband rollout.

BT claims that it will have 95% of the country connected to fibre via Openreach by the end of 2017.

As well as a rise in the uptake of broadband, BT has also reported an increase in employment, with 1000 jobs created for the firm last year.

This is mostly covered by its call centres, with BT aiming to answer over 80% of customer calls by the end of this year.
