BT pledges to follow new Ofcom guidelines

BT has said that it will follow the new Code of Practise that Ofcom set earlier this year.

The consumer watchdog announced earlier in the year that it would be suggesting a voluntary code which would ask providers to be more clear on broadband advertising.

Despite the code being voluntary, BT has claimed it will act to make its services and pricing structure more clear to potential customers.

The allegiance to the code comes after rival provider TalkTalk said it would sign up the new guidelines “without hesitation”.

A spokesperson for BT said that BT was committed to giving its customers the best and most clear experience possible.

“We fully comply with the updated Code of Practice. We give customers personalised speed range estimates for copper and fibre broadband before they decide to buy."

As well as clearer advertising, BT has said that it also intends to make it easier for customers to leave the provider when they want if they aren’t happy with the service.

“We’ll increase the time new customers have to end their contract without penalty from 90 days to the minimum period of their contract if, after we’ve tried to fix it, they can’t get the minimum speed we guarantee.”

BT has also been under pressure from Ofcom to separate from its Openreach program, but this has not yet been enforced despite Ofcom’s suggestion that it should.
