Over 100 different public Wi-Fi access points to be installed throughout London in the next few months.
Telecommunication giant BT has entered into a partnership with American firm Link to install over 100 different public Wi-Fi access points throughout London in the next few months.
Named Links, these access points will offer access to free high-speed 1Gbps internet, which BT claim is faster than any other equivalent Wi-Fi service, along with the ability to charge your mobile phone and make calls to any UK landline or mobile phone for free.
These new access points will be replacing London’s iconic red phone boxes in an effort to further modernize the capital city and to free up space on its busy pavements.
Two 55 inch HD screens take up the majority of each Link which also means that they’re able to act as a kind of information hub for the area they’ve been placed in. For example, displaying directions to the nearest underground station or a list of the best nearby local restaurants.
100 more Links are set to be installed across the borough of Camden in 2017 with a further 750 to come across central London and other major UK cities.
“We’re evolving the phone box to make it relevant in the 21st century by offering ultrafast Wi-Fi and a range of digital and information services entirely for free,” said Gerry McQuade CEO of BT wholesale and ventures, "London is one of the greatest cities in the world and it’s entirely fitting that it becomes the first UK city to benefit from the Links".
