Business secretary announces review of UK business broadband

The business secretary has announced a wide-range review of the UK’s business broadband network.

Sajid Javid said in a speech that he would work with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in order to start looking to improving broadband for small and medium businesses.

The announcement is a reaction to research done by broadband provider Virgin Media last month, which claims that poor broadband performance is the biggest time waster for businesses.

Virgin Media found that the average business worker loses 15 minutes of productivity every day due to internet issues.

The Federation of Small Businesses has also added its thoughts, claiming that many businesses in the UK have complained about the lack of high speed broadband.

Mr Javid said that the government would add to its broadband rollout of the UK and take steps to increase competition and drive down prices.

“I want Britain to be at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution and to lead the world in innovation.”

“As a one nation government I want every business, regardless of size or location, to benefit from access to the fast, reliable connectivity they need to thrive.”

Broadband for businesses in the UK has shown signs of improvement in the last few months.

In November last year, Virgin Media announced a new 300Mbps broadband package for business owners, with the provider insisting that these are the fastest available speeds in the UK.
