Cornwall is enjoying economic benefits after making superfast broadband a top priority, a spokesperson from BT has claimed.

Bill Murphy, BT’s managing director, praised the county for putting broadband first when considering local utilities.

The Superfast Cornwall project has been responsible for the increase in speeds, working in conjunction with the government’s Broadband Delivery UK to make fibre options available for 95% of homes in the county.

Figures show that Cornwall has been one of the most successful countries in the UK when it came to broadband uptake, with an added 40% of people overall now choosing fibre packages.

Research done by the University of Plymouth also showed that the local economy of Cornwall has experienced a £186 million rise due to the rollout, as well as providing 4,500 new jobs.

Mr Murphy added that Cornwall as hugely helpful when BT was installing new cables, as it made broadband a priority in the area.

“Cornwall made it a priority so if we needed a road closed they closed it. If we needed planning permission we could get it. If we needed a permit they’d be there to support us.”

“They made it a priority, they had to get 10,000 small businesses connected so they did – they’ve got over 12,000 and they’re reaping the economic benefit.”

As well as Cornwall, other parts of the UK have been said to stand out when it comes to dedication to broadband expansion.

Areas in with Scotland and Wales have shown significant levels of improvement due to rollouts, with 95% of those respective countries due to be covered by the end of 2017.
