The number of properties in Herefordshire that are connected to superfast broadband has reached 22,000, new figures from BT have shown.

The provider’s multi-million pound ‘Fastershire’ scheme has aimed to bring faster broadband to one of the most remote areas of the UK.

Due to the scheme, thousands of properties have been reported to now be connected to faster broadband or even connected for the first time.

This has involved erecting over 700 telephone masts that span over 13km of roads, which has been essential for some properties to get connected.

It is estimated that 65% of homes in Herefordshire are now able to access to high-speed broadband, with that figure estimated to rise to 95% by the end of 2016.

Broadband users in the area can now reach speeds of up to 30Mbps, something which would have been unthinkable for many before the rollout.

The Fastershire initiative was planned by Herefordshire County Council, which commission broadband provider BT to rollout broadband as a continuation of the work already achieved by the national government rollout.

Ian Binks, BT’s regional manager for the area, claimed that many of the residents were already noticing a change in their broadband speeds.

“It’s great for anyone wanting to combine shopping online and use of ‘click and collect’ services with browsing the web to see what local retailers have to offer.”

“Fibre broadband also enables people to use several different devices at the same time, so children can play online games or do their homework without interfering with parents watching catch-up television or uploading photos.”
