A new satellite broadband service has been launched, offering customers speeds of up to 30 Mbps.

Providers Avanti and Avonline have joined together to create the new service, which is being touted as the first superfast satellite broadband scheme.

This, the providers claim, will allow rural communities to be connected without lines being installed and without the limited speed of standard satellite broadband.

Both companies are cooperating with the government as part of its satellite broadband voucher scheme, offers up to £350 to homes and businesses to get satellite broadband installed.

Satellite broadband is viewed by the government as a way of expanding the 95% coverage rate to 100% by reaching areas the standard rollout cannot.

Previously, satellite broadband has been limited in the speed it can provide customers, often costing a lot more than standard broadband for the same speeds.

With this new system, Avanti and Avonline hope to make satellite broadband a viable option for rural communities.

Mark Wynn, managing director of Avonline, said that the new technology would allow those in hard to reach areas to catch up with standard broadband speeds.

“Availability of a choice of affordable, blistering fast broadband packages, based on Avanti’s leading technology, finally means that rural consumers should no longer feel second class when it comes to broadband provision.”

The government is in the process of implementing a Universal Service Obligation, which allows everyone in the UK to legally have access to up to 10Mbps broadband speed.

Satellite broadband has been cited as one of the best ways to implement the USO, with advances in the technology allowing for higher speeds.
