HighNet adds funding to help Glasgow’s “gigabit” status

HighNet, a Scottish broadband developer, has added £250,000 of funding to Glasgow’s fibre network.

HighNet has used the funding to build a new fibre base in the city, which will move Glasgow further to becoming a “gigabit city”.

Superfast broadband provider CityFibre is building 40km of fibre connections throughout the city in a partnership with HighNet, which is expected to go live in early 2017.

CityFibre has claimed that the new network will be up to 100 times faster than the current connectivity than the current infrastructure.

When the project is complete, 7000 businesses and public sector buildings could possibly enjoy gigabit broadband.

CityFibre is also working on other Scottish cities in order to get their broadband infrastructure up to speed.

Edinburgh is currently undergoing a 150km cable installation, which is due to be completed next month.

David J Siegel, Managing Director at HighNet, said that HighNet needed to get on board with the gigabit project in order to bring better broadband to its customers.

“The launch of the Glasgow Gigabit City project, it was vital for HighNet to set up a local presence so that we could service our rapidly growing network of staff, partners and customers in the city.”

“Glasgow’s Gigabit City status will ensure its businesses and organisations can stay ahead of the curve, and we look forward to playing our part in delivering this ambitious project.  Exciting and interesting times lie ahead.”
