It's hoped that everybody across the two islands will have access to these ultrafast speeds by 2021.
Jersey Telecom (JT) has partnered up with China’s ZTE to build an ultrafast 5G network on both of the Channel Islands.
The contracts were signed in the Chinese city of Shenzhen on Tuesday and explain that the project will begin with the two constructing an entire test 5G network in 2019.
Providing there’s no major issues, they’ll then begin the official rollout which will gradually reach more homes and businesses across Jersey and Guernsey as the 5G standards start to solidify.
It’s hoped that everybody will have access to these ultrafast speeds by 2021.
JT recently completed the building of an entirely new FTTP (fibre-to-the-premise) gigabit enabled infrastructure so the upcoming 5G network should have access to all of the necessary capacity.
Both have previously worked together to successfully bring 4G to the Channel Islands.
In addition to a huge number of Internet of Things devices, JT has predicted that 10% of Islanders will have 5G enabled devices by 2023.
It's expected that the 5G rollout for the mainland UK will begin in late 2019.
