Just 4% of UK farmers can connect to fibre, says NFU

Only 4% of the farmers operating in the UK can connect to superfast broadband, the National Farmers Union has claimed.

The NFU said that the government should support the UK’s agricultural industry by providing better broadband, and that it was essential to their work.

One of the major reasons for fast broadband cited by the NFU was that farmers are increasingly having to use the internet to access guidelines and sell their produce.

Guy Smith, Vice-President of the organisation, claimed that the farming industry was unable to grow without significant boost to the broadband structure.

“The government is asking farmers to run their businesses in conditions that put them at an immediate disadvantage.”

“We have heard of farmers waiting 15 hours to download a Countryside Stewardship guidance booklet; farmers can’t comply with increasingly online-only regulation and aren’t able to contact their customers."

Mr Smith also noted that some farmers could take advantage of better agricultural technology with faster broadband.

The government is currently rolling out fibre-optic to made available to the majority of the country, with a 95% coverage rate being targeted.

However, the NFU has said that it should work harder to deliver its promise of making the UK the best connected country in the EU and look to expand rural connectivity.
