Mobile broadband now reaches nearly 4 billion people, new research has shown.

The International Telecommunication Union conducted a study which found that 53% of the global population had access to mobile broadband.

3.2 billion people are said to be subscribed to some form of mobile broadband currently, with that figure expected to rise to 3.6 billion by the end of the year.

The growth rate for mobile broadband was also said to be in double digits in developing countries, especially ones where fixed line broadband was rare or difficult to get.

As well as charting the growth and spread of mobile broadband, the study also noted the the overall cost.

Mobile services, in general, were found to be cheaper than fixed line broadband in the majority of cases, with the average price of fixed line more than double that of the average comparable mobile broadband plan.

Despite the rise in broadband service, the ITU said that 3.9 billion people were still not able to access the internet at all, with internet services only reaches 15% of people in Least Developed Countries.

ITU showed that only 15.4% of homes in Africa are connected to the internet, compared to 84% in Europe, showing that the digital divide is an issue in less developed areas.
