A new survey has shown that well over a third of broadband customers do not receive the speed that has been promised to them by providers.

ISPreview.co.uk found that 33.42% of broadband customers were not receieving the service they’d been sold.

49.3% of the 1,242 asked claimed to have tested their connections themselves, with the majority not being satisfied with the results.

Performance estimates by providers have been found to be innaccurate across the board, with ISPreview claiming that checking the speeds yourself can help find faults and inconsistencies.

The government's Broadband Delivery UK rollout has also been cited as potentially distorted, as it uses many of the same lines and estimates as UK providers.

Researchers of the subject have said that the government’s target of 24Mbps and over may be exaggerated, with the real service offering significantly less.

Nearly 50% of the users asked in the survey claimed that looking closely into their broadband speed was “very important”.

This has been made easier this year, as new laws have come into place which state that if a customer is not receiving promised speeds, they can switch providers without incurring any penalties.

More and more providers are now offering services that allow you to check your speeds, with Plusnet being the latest to follow this trend.
