Rural broadband to get EU funding via Gigaclear

Broadband provider Gigaclear has announced that it will receive European funding in order to improve rural broadband in the UK.

Broadband provider Gigaclear has announced that it will receive European funding in order to improve rural broadband in the UK.

In one of the biggest investments in the market, the European Investment Bank has loaned Gigaclear £18 million so that it can expand throughout the UK.

Gigaclear offers ultrafast, pure fibre broadband to properties and businesses in the UK, but has previously been available in largely urban areas.

This investment is the start of the provider’s push into the rural market, despite already having a slight presence there.

Gigaclear aims to expand its rural numbers from 15,000 to over 40,000, with the provider currently hosting fibre in areas such as Berkshire, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire.

Investment from EIB is part of the firm’s plan to make its ambitions more realistic, with the money being used to install broadband in difficult areas.

Gigaclear estimates that it could potentially serve over 1.5 million customers in the UK, with the loan being the first step in achieving this goal.

Chief Executive of Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, claimed that, by using fibre broadband, rural areas would finally catch up to cities when it came to broadband infrastructure.

“Infrastructure upgrades will give people access to the fastest internet speeds "to be found anywhere in the world. This will technologically future-proof communities in rural areas for many years to come.”

“By using pure fibre, Gigaclear is not simply connecting rural communities, but instead helping them leapfrog a whole generation of technology".
