Sky trials new 18Mbps Fibre broadband service

Sky has announced that it is testing a new 18Mbps fibre broadband speed.

Sky has announced that it is testing a new 18Mbps fibre broadband speed.

The broadband provider plans to release the new broadband upgrade next month and is currently trialling it with 20,000 of its subscribers.

The new package is designed to allow those on standard ADSL packages to receive fibre broadband via fibre-to-the-cabinet technology.

Dubbed ‘Sky Fibre Lite’, this package will be used as a mid-range package between standard ADSL and full fibre-optic.

Based on BT’s Openreach platform, Sky Fibre Lite will act as a bridge to get more customers used to fibre speeds.

Customers who sign up the the trial have not been expected to pay any extra than they would for the standard 17Mbps, which is thought to continue after the trial has ended.

A spokesperson for Sky said that Sky FIbre Lite would allow more customers to experience how good fibre broadband was.

“In July, we are moving some of our Sky Broadband Unlimited customers to a new Sky Fibre Lite product, which will significantly increase their broadband speeds and give them a better experience when using the Internet. These customers will be able to do more of what we know they love, like downloading their favourite on demand TV shows faster and streaming live video content.

We are committed to ensuring our customers have the best possible broadband service and will continue to look at ways to improve speeds for customers.”

Sky is due to send out confirmation to those who have been chosen for the trail in the coming weeks.
