UK business community demands support for ultrafast broadband

Businesses in the UK have called for more funding in order to receive acceptable ultrafast broadband.

Businesses in the UK have called for more funding in order to receive acceptable ultrafast broadband.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has said that the government’s expectations of ultrafast broadband is lacking compared to that of the ordinary business owner.

Currently, the government classes ultrafast speed as 24Mbps, but the BBC claims that the standard should be over 30Mbps.

The BCC has said that, in order for Britain to continue being competitive in the business world, broadband needs to be a top priority.

John Longworth, Director General of the firm, claimed that the broadband infrastructure for businesses was lacking and needed to be improved.

“The digital world is changing daily and UK firms have a track record as global innovators and leaders. However, the infrastructure they rely upon is failing to keep pace."

“The UK government must set a far more ambitious digital strategy, starting with an immediate action plan to boost mobile and fibre connections for business."

He also noted that most businesses rely on both fibre and mobile broadband in order to run correctly, and that both needed an improved strategy.

Recently, a study showed that slow broadband was the number one time waster for small and medium businesses, which experience up to a day’s worth of lost productivity every week.

The BCC has sent a letter to the government, presenting its argument to Culture Secretary John Whittingdale.
