Virgin Media could raise prices in early 2016

Virgin Media customers could see the monthly price of their broadband rise by a significant amount next year.

Virgin Media customers could see the monthly price of their broadband rise by a significant amount next year.

The company’s annual review has revealed plans to raise the price of its broadband and phone packages by up to £3.99 per month in February 2016.
Packages such as the Big Bundle, Big Connection and Big Easy could all see price increases, as these are generally the most popular types of packages.

Customers who are on broadband only packages, however, will not be affected by the proposed price rises, as their prices have already seen an increase earlier this month.

The move is said to be down to Virgin’s new focus of delivering increased download speeds, with speeds due to rise to up to 200Mbps.

Gregor McNeil, Managing Director of the firm, claimed that Virgin Media was trying its best to keep prices competitive compared with the rest of the market.

“Through the continuing investment in our network we are again upgrading our customers’ broadband speeds and providing unlimited downloads – meeting the growth in data consumption we see.”

"Our customers want to do more online, so we are always making sure that our customers get more for the prices they pay.”

Virgin Media has made it clear that if it does raise its prices across the board, existing customers will be able to cancel their subscription without paying a leaving penalty.

Virgin Media's increased download speeds is one of many projects the provider is undertaking going into 2016.

The provider's Wi-Fi is also due to launch at some point next year, allowing customers to access Wi-Fi hotspots through an app on their phone.
