Virgin Media names 10 rural communities for fibre broadband

Virgin Media has announced the first 10 rural communities that will benefit from its Project Lightning programme.

Virgin Media has announced the first 10 rural communities that will benefit from its Project Lightning programme.

Part of the provider’s £3 billion expansion, the 10 areas were chosen based on votes from local residents and businesses that would benefit from improved broadband.

The 10 areas include places such as Houston, Crosslee, Brookfield and Wilsden, with four hailing from Scotland.

Virgin Media claimed that it had received over 7000 votes in order to reach its decision.

Premises in the areas chosen are set to receive fibre-to-the-premises broadband, giving a huge boost to potential speeds.

The provider has said that a quarter of the homes it aims to connect during the entire rollout will be connected via this technology.

This new technology also allows cables to be installed quicker, as the trenches used to lay cables are reduced from 40cm to 10cm, allowing them to be laid twice as fast.

COO of Virgin Media, Paul Buttery, said that the level of support it had for connecting rural areas proved that fibre broadband wasn’t just for large cities.

“The collective support and demand from across the UK has exceeded our expectations and we’re delighted to be supercharging these 10 areas with ultrafast fibre broadband and top notch entertainment.”

“Investing and delivering better connectivity in these communities shows that ultrafast broadband isn’t just for the big cities – we urge more communities to come together and register their interest. You could be next.”
