Vodafone hits 20Gbps mark in 5G tests

Vodafone has claimed to reach 20Gbps of speed in its 5G network tests.

Vodafone has claimed to reach 20Gbps of speed in its 5G network tests.

The mobile provider has combined with manufacturer Huawei to develop a new 5G network, something that is aimed to be completed by 2020.

The two companies have been experimenting with the 25GHz band, which allows faster speeds to be transmitted to mobile devices.

Currently, the majority of 4G services run on the 3GHz band in order to ensure that it gets the widest coverage possible.

The new technology works by allowing radio signals from transmitters to be “steered”, giving better accuracy.

Vodafone and Huawei say that this research will eventually allow 5G to become the norm in the UK, giving mobile broadband speeds a significant boost.

Johan Wilberg, Vodafone Group CTO, claimed that the tests had helped with the understanding of 5G.

“This field test in an outdoor environment is a significant step forward in validating the performance of 5G in high frequency bands. It has improved our understanding of the capabilities and opportunities that the technology offers.”

“5G will introduce full spectrum access to support AR, VR, Smart Automobile and other unknown new services.”

Vodafone will continue testing 4G at its headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire.
