The broadband rollout of Wales is due to be completed at the end of this month, reports have claimed.

The rollout, which is being orchestrated by the Welsh government and BT, set out to connect 655,000 homes with high-speed broadband.

This means that around 96% of the country will have superfast broadband available to them, giving those living in major towns and cities more broadband options.

This, however, has spurred worries that more rural areas, which are common in Wales, will be left out as part of the 4% that aren’t connected.

President of NFU Cymru, Stephen James, said that the digital divide could grow larger.

“Without a comprehensive strategy for targeting superfast broadband to rural areas, we fear that this could only widen the digital divide between urban areas and rural communities.”

Despite concerns about rural areas, urban areas have also suffered from lack of high-speed broadband in the past.

The Welsh government last year published figures that showed that only 53% of properties in Cardiff were connected to superfast broadband.

Due to the rollout, the digital future of Wales in general is set to improve, with a joint statement from the government and BT saying they they were both looking into making sure the “final few” weren’t left behind.
