A Scottish windfarm company has come under fire after it offered to build more turbines to improve broadband.

Energy company RES (Renewable Energy Systems) has been criticised by anti-turbine activists for offering to install more turbines near Loch Ness.

These extra turbines would, in theory, improve broadband and phone connections in the area.

Because of this, RES has been accused of using a “cynical ploy” in order to get more people on its side.

The proposal was put forward in April, and has caused a significant amount of debate within the local community.

Despite the fact that lack of broadband is deemed to be an issue in the area, the resistance to build more masts has proved a bigger issue.

John Appleton, RES’s development manager, said that masts would have made a significant improvement on broadband in the area.

“The community locally had identified that broadband was an issue.”

“As part of the development we were able to identify an opportunity to address this and our meteorological mast could have helped facilitate broadband within the Strathnairn area.”

The Loch Ness area has seen a significant amount of windfarm development in recent years, with over 500 turbines either already built or planned.
