Our First Utility Review

About First Utility

First Utility has grown its customer base considerably since 2013, and the energy provider has subsequently chosen to take on the broadband market.

Following in the footsteps of SSE, First Utility is looking to tempt broadband customers away from the big names. A simple package structure, alongside the lure of free connection, could be enough to turn heads, and the option of fibre at a competitive price is always eye-catching.

Package Features

Customers can choose ‘up to 17Mbps’ ADSL broadband, or go with fibre and get either ‘up to 38Mbps’ or ‘up to 76Mbps’.  Prices increase accordingly, but include line rental and there’s no connection fee or charge for router delivery.

Monthly downloads are unlimited, and there are no upfront costs. Customers also get a 6-month DisneyLife subscription, which gives families unlimited streaming of classic Disney favourites, as well as Disney TV, music and books.

Equipment

You’ll get a router for your wireless home network, and this is sent to you for free, as opposed to a lot of providers who add this as an extra charge.

Customer Service

First Utility broadband is supported by its energy service call centre, based in the UK. The provider was awarded Customer Service of the Year for utilities in 2016/17, and is Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended for service and value for utilities.

With this in mind you can be confident of a good customer service experience should you choose First Utility.

Switching to First Utility

Switching is easy; make sure you’re free to leave your existing provider, and if there’s a fee then you’ll need to decide whether it’s worth paying. If you only have a couple of months left on your existing contract then you might as well wait.

If you’re happy to switch the follow the link for whichever First Utility deal you like, and then they’ll handle the rest. They should get in contact to arrange a date for switching the connection, and they’ll take all the final details needed.

Line Rental

Line rental is included in the package price.

Availability

As with most broadband, availability will depend on your location.  There are some areas of the country where the network does not reach.

PROs

  • No connection fee
  • Free router delivery
  • Simple package structure

CONs

  • Inexperienced broadband provider
  • Some areas out of network reach
  • Limited data on actual speeds
