Should you switch from BT to EE?

Thinking about making the jump? Find out how they both stack up.

BT and EE are now part of the same company - in fact, EE has recently become BT Group’s main consumer brand - but that doesn't necessarily mean they're the same broadband provider.

While they share much of the same network infrastructure, there are still differences in the packages, perks and bundles they offer. So, if you're coming to the end of your BT contract, is it worth switching to EE? Here's everything you need to know.

Are BT and EE the same company?

Although BT and EE are owned by the same company and share much of the same network infrastructure, BT is gradually positioning EE as its main brand for consumer broadband, TV and mobile services. In practice, this means many new products and offers are launched under the EE name, while existing BT customers can continue using BT Broadband as normal.

Both providers use the Openreach network - as do many other providers in the UK - and both offer similar products, but it’s important to note that BT and EE both still exist as separate products with meaningful differences.

What's the difference between BT and EE broadband?

While both BT and EE use the nationwide Openreach network for the majority of their broadband services, their offerings are by no means identical.

For many households, broadband speeds and reliability will be very similar; the main differences lie outside of the providers’ relative upload and download speeds.

EE places a greater emphasis on combining broadband with mobile and TV services, often offering additional benefits to existing EE mobile customers, while BT focuses on straightforward broadband and broadband-and-TV packages, making it a good choice for customers who simply want a reliable home internet connection without the added mobile perks.

Why switch from BT to EE?

There are several reasons why switching could make sense for you:

  • You could save money - Like many broadband providers, EE often reserves its best deals for new customers. If your BT contract is ending, comparing the latest EE offers could help you reduce your monthly bill.
  • You're already an EE mobile customer - If you already have an EE mobile contract, moving your broadband to EE could unlock additional benefits.
  • You want broadband and TV together - EE offers a range of flexible TV packages that can be bundled with broadband, making it easier to manage everything under one provider.
  • You're looking for a fresh deal - Even if you're happy with BT's service, switching providers can sometimes give you access to newer hardware, better introductory pricing or additional extras.

Is switching from BT to EE easy?

Absolutely! Thanks to the One Touch Switch process, changing broadband provider is now much simpler than it used to be.

In most cases, your new provider - in this case EE - would handle the switch for you. Your existing service would continue right up until your new one is ready, ensuring that any downtime is kept to a minimum, and you should be told if you need to return any old equipment.

Will my broadband speed change if I switch?

Not necessarily. Both BT and EE use the Openreach network for most of their fibre and full fibre connections, meaning the maximum speeds available at your address are likely to be pretty similar.

The biggest differences are usually found in pricing, bundled services and customer benefits rather than broadband performance.

BT vs EE: Which is better?

There’s no clear-cut answer, unfortunately. Which provider is ‘better’ really depends on your circumstances and the things that add value for your household.

EE could be the better option if:

  • You're already an EE mobile customer.
  • You want to bundle broadband, mobile and TV.
  • EE is offering a cheaper introductory deal.

On the other hand, sticking with BT could be the better option if:

  • You're happy with your current service.
  • BT offers you a competitive renewal price.
  • You don't need the additional mobile benefits offered by EE.

Ultimately, both providers offer reliable broadband over the same underlying network, so the deciding factors for you will inevitably come down to pricing and any extras included in their respective packages.

Should I switch from BT to EE?

The big question. While they might be owned by the same company - and operate on the same nationwide network - BT and EE’s offerings actually differ quite a bit in terms of their deals, bundle options and incentives.

If you’re currently with BT and out of contract, it’s absolutely worth comparing the two before making a decision.

In many cases, switching to EE could save you money or provide better value, particularly if you're already an EE mobile customer. However, if BT offers you a competitive renewal deal, there's no reason to switch purely because the two brands now belong to the same company - BT’s broadband isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
